What is a Cranial Prosthesis?

A hair prosthesis (or cranial prosthesis) is a custom-made wig specifically designed for patients who have lost their hair as a result of medical conditions or treatments, such as Alopecia Areata, Alopecia Totalis, Trichotillomania, Chemotherapy, or any other clinical disease or treatment resulting in hair loss. The terminology is used when applying for medical insurance or tax deduction status.

Doctors have been prescribing these prostheses since the 1950s. Cranial prostheses also help to protect disease-weakened immune systems from the sun, and to regulate body temperature.

Cranial hair prostheses have advanced due to technology. A cranial hair prosthesis is different from a regular wig. Cranial hair prosthesis is done in several steps that include the taking of the cranial perimeter mold to achieve a perfect fit. The mold is done at the base where the hair is attached. The base is made using a hypoallergenic fabric because people having chemotherapy are usually very sensitive to any material, and their scalp is prone to allergies. The same is done when applying the hair to the base. The technique used to attach the hair is focused on avoiding that the knotting touches the scalp. If you are in the Texas area, Divine Hair Co, will create a mold of your Scalp/Alopecia to send in to the supplier for a PERFECT fit! Out-of-State available upon request.

Cranial Prosthesis versus a Wig

Social Media has definitely taking over and CHANGED the hair game! There are many stylist licensed and unlicensed creating "Custom Units/Wigs," however is that unit truly custom and fit your Alopecia needs? When someone has Alopecia or Trichotillomania, there is certain adhesive (tape or lace glue) not recommended for their scalp. There is also material that many stylist are using that can cause overheating of the scalp and/or scalp irritation. A Certified Hair Specialist has taken additional classes to provide you with the hair products and units needed for hair loss. In addition to our owner being a Licensed and Certified Hair Loss Specialist, she is also a Licensed Master of Social Worker with a specialization in Health & Behavioral Health. Wow! Aren't you in good hands? We're not State Farm, however we are known for creating, luxurious custom units to fit each of our clients individual needs!

Below is the type of cap construction created to provide a true "Custom" hair prosthesis just for you! Please note that we are able to make combination units. We know that you all love our natural, realistic Lace Fronts because of the natural hairline it gives and we are still able to provide you just that! A Combo Cranial Prosthesis includes lace at the front (for a natural-looking hairline), Polyurethane (PU) throughout to keep the unit in place and to fully cover any baldness/thinning or we could create Lace at the front, PU around the perimeter and Mono throughout the unit. Our PU units are recommended for wherever baldness is and our Monofilament (Mono) Unit are recommended for ventilation/air. Most importantly, if you are required to get injections or have to apply a cream to your scalp, our units with "Integration Chains" are recommended and favorable by physicians. On your Inquiry form, please include what type of hair system is best for you!

Combination Prostheses

Polyurethane (PU)

Thin Skin - This is a material that is used in a specially designed cranial prosthesis. It has a very natural appearance and is extremely fine and thin. It produces an effect as if hair is naturally growing from the scalp. This is often used for bonding a wig onto the scalp with a specialized bonding glue that will hold it in place for six weeks before it will need to be taken off, cleaned and reattached with fresh glue.

Monofilament (MONO)

Monofilament construction gives the appearance that the hair is actually growing from the scalp. Thin, breathable fabric is placed at the hairline or the front of the head toward the crown section.  The top portion of the cap is specially woven to allow for comfort and excellent ventilation. This helps to prevent irritation and itchiness. It will "Breathe" while being worn, thereby preventing heat and moisture build up.  Monofilament is considered to be one of the most desirable of wig types. Most women, especially those who wear wigs every day, feel that its superior wearability and natural look more than justify the additional cost.

Integration Chains

Integration System - An integration hair system refers to the type of base material used and is ideal for women (or men) with thinning hair or diffused hair loss like that in Female Pattern Hairloss. An Integration System allows you to pull your existing, growing hair directly through the unit. This allows you to wear a custom hair replacement system without shaving your head. Your own natural, growing hair is combined with the hair in the system to create a more voluminous and complete head of hair. Depending on the thickness and fullness of your growing hair, there are a variety of different integration hair systems all with varying sizes and shapes of holes in the mesh.

Lace Front

A hair prosthesis that uses a lace front is a very thin lace lining across the front of the wig that gives the illusion of a natural hairline. This allows for the wearer to be able to part their wig in the front ONLY. The front of the wig can be parted into a side bang, middle part, and put up into a bun/ponytail.

Full Lace

Just as the Lace Front wigs, the lace is sewn at the front of the wig as well as throughout the entire wig cap. Therefore, the wearer is able to part the hair anywhere, not just at the front. In addition, the wearer is able to pull the hair up into a high ponytail and/or updo. This type of cap construction typically lasts longer than Lace Front Wig.
